DISTRICTS
For the purpose of this chapter, the unincorporated areas of the County of Accomack, Virginia, are hereby divided into the following districts:
Agricultural district "A"
Residential district "R"
Rural residential district "RR"
Barrier Island district "BI"
General business district "B-1"
Limited business district "B-2"
Industrial district "I"
Village development district "VDD"
In addition, the following overlay districts apply in the unincorporated areas of the county as described herein and shown on maps approved by the board of supervisors, said maps being incorporated herein and made a part of this chapter. Such districts shall be an overlay to the existing underlying zoning districts and as such, overlay regulations shall supplement or qualify the underlying zoning district regulations. In the case of any conflict between the regulations of the overlay district and those of the underlying zoning district, the more restrictive provisions shall apply:
Airport overlay district
Chesapeake Atlantic preservation overlay District
Flood hazard overlay district
Wallops Island space transit overlay corridor
No building shall hereafter be erected and no existing building shall be moved, altered, added to or enlarged nor shall any land or building be used, designed or arranged to be used for any purpose other than is included among the uses listed in this chapter as permitted in the district in which such building or land is located, nor in any manner contrary to any other requirement specified in this chapter.
The regulations listed in this chapter for each district shall be deemed to be the minimum requirements in every instance of their application, subject to the provisions of other sections of this chapter.
Permitted and conditional uses are listed for each district. Conditional uses include uses for -which a conditional use permit or a special use permit, also known as a special exception, is required. Any use that is not listed as permitted or conditional is prohibited in such district, except in the case of the agricultural district, the BZA may deem a use to be clearly similar and compatible with the uses listed in the agricultural district regulations, in which case the use may be allowed if a special use permit/special exception is issued.
