SIGNS

17.55 - SIGNS, PERMITS AND REGULATIONS. (Am. 11/3/86)

(1)

SIGNS PERMITTED. Signs are permitted in all Agricultural, Business and Industrial Districts, subject to the following restrictions:

(a)

Wall Signs. Wall signs placed against the exterior walls of buildings shall not extend more than 6 inches outside of a building's wall surface, shall not exceed 500 square feet in area for any one premises and shall not exceed 20 feet in height above the mean centerline street grade.

(b)

Projecting Signs. Projecting signs fastened to, suspended from or supported by structures shall not exceed 100 square feet in area for any one premises, extend more than 6 feet into any required yard, extend more than 3 feet into any public right-of-way, be less than 10 feet from all side lot lines, exceed a height of 20 feet above the mean centerline street grade and be less than 10 feet above the sidewalk nor 15 feet above a driveway or an alley.

(c)

Ground Signs. Ground signs shall not exceed 20 feet in height above the mean centerline street grade, shall meet all yard requirements for the district in which it is located, shall not exceed 100 square feet on one side nor 200 square feet on all sides for any one premises, except in agricultural districts, which shall not exceed 600 square feet.

(d)

Roof Signs. Roof signs shall not exceed 10 feet in height above the roof, shall meet all the yard and height requirements for the district in which it is located and shall not exceed 300 square feet on all sides for any one premises.

(e)

Residential Districts. In all residential districts no sign may exceed 8 square feet.

(f)

Combinations. Combinations of any of the above signs shall meet all the requirements for the individual sign.

(2)

FACING. No sign except those permitted in par. (1)(e) shall be permitted to face a residential district within 100 feet of such district boundary.

(3)

TRAFFIC. Signs shall not resemble, imitate or approximate the shape, size, form or color of railroad or traffic signs, signals or devices. Signs shall not obstruct or interfere with the effectiveness of railroad or traffic signs, signals or devices. No sign shall be erected, relocated or maintained so as to prevent free ingress to or egress from any door, window or fire escape and no sign shall be attached to a standpipe or fire escape. No sign shall be placed so as to obstruct or interfere with traffic visibility.

(4)

EXISTING SIGNS. Signs lawfully existing on June 6, 1967, or at the time of amendment of this chapter may be continued although the use, size or location does not conform with the provisions of this chapter. However, it shall be deemed a nonconforming use or structure and the provisions of §17.56 shall apply.

(5)

REMOVAL OF OUTDATED SIGNS. (Cr. 9/6/94) All signs which advertise or refer to places, things or businesses whose nature or use has changed, thereby making the signs inaccurate or outdated, and all signs which advertise or refer to conditions which no longer exist shall be removed from the property on which they are located by the property owner within 30 days after such signs become inaccurate or outdated.
