Signs 1

§ 300-39 Purpose.

It is the general intent of this article to prohibit signs of a commercial nature from districts in which commercial activities are barred and to control the number, type and area of all signs in business areas and certain other districts. Signs required or erected by governmental agencies shall be exempt from the requirements of this article.

§ 300-40 Permit required. [1]

No signs, except those described by § 300-41A(1) and (4) below, shall be built until an improvement location permit is issued by the Code Compliance Officer.

§ 300-41 Residence districts.

A. 
Signs shall be permitted in residence districts only as follows:
(1) 
One nonilluminated name plate not exceeding one square foot in area for each dwelling unit indicating only name, address and occupation.
(2) 
One nonilluminated identification sign for multiple-family dwellings and offices not exceeding five square feet in area indicating only name, address, management name, and management address.
(3) 
One nonilluminated identification sign for home occupations not exceeding nine square feet in area.
(4) 
One nonilluminated "for sale" or "for rent" sign per lot not exceeding 12 square feet in area nor closer than 10 feet to adjacent zoning lots.
(5) 
One nonilluminated sign designating each entrance to or exit from a parking area not exceeding five square feet in area and indicating conditions of use.
(6) 
One nonflashing church bulletin board sign not exceeding 16 square feet in area.
B. 
Permitted signs shall not project into the public right-of-way, and the top of the sign shall not be higher than eight feet above curb level. On a corner lot, two signs, one facing each street, shall be permitted for signs set forth in Subsection A(2), (4) and (6) above.

§ 300-42 Business districts.

In business districts, signs visible from the public way shall be permitted only when subject to the following conditions: The gross area in square feet of all signs on a business shall not exceed 10 times the lot frontage in lineal feet. Flashing signs shall be limited to 100 square feet. All flashing signs and illuminated signs shall be shielded from park areas and residence districts, and no sign shall be within 20 feet of a residence district. No sign shall project more than 18 inches into the public way, except nonilluminated signs indicating name and/or address only, mounted flat on marquees, canopies and awnings. Roof signs are not permitted.

§ 300-43 Manufacturing districts.

A. 
In manufacturing districts, signs visible from the public way shall be permitted only when subject to the following conditions:
(1) 
Light manufacturing districts: The gross area in square feet of all signs on a lot shall not exceed two times the lot frontage in lineal feet. No firm shall have more than five signs, of which no more than two shall be advertising signs of other firms.
(2) 
General manufacturing districts: The gross area in square feet of all signs on a lot shall not exceed 10 times the lot frontage in lineal feet. No firm shall have more than eight signs.
B. 
All flashing signs and illuminated signs shall be shielded from park areas and residence districts. No sign shall be within 20 feet of a park or residence district. No sign shall project more than 18 inches into the public way, except nonilluminated signs indicating name and/or address only, mounted flat on marquees, canopies and awnings.
