Signs of or required by duly constituted governmental bodies and their agencies.

Flags of the national, state, county or town government not exceeding 15 square feet in area.

Temporary signs in any district pertaining to and displayed during campaigns, drives, or events of civic, political, philanthropic or educational institutions, provided such signs are displayed not more than 45 days before the event and removed three days after the event.

In the R-50 and R-35 Districts, not more than one nonilluminated name and address sign, not exceeding one square foot in area, showing only the name of the occupant and/or the address of the premises on which they are situated and the occupation of the occupant where permitted under § 230-26J, provided such sign is located not closer than 15 feet to a side lot line. Such sign may be located on the wall of a building or on a post set in the ground.

One temporary, nonilluminated "For Sale" or "For Rent" sign per lot, provided such sign is located on the specific lot to which it relates. Such sign shall be less than 15 square feet in area in residential districts and less than 30 square feet in area in nonresidential districts. Such a sign shall be permitted only during such period of time that the property to which it relates is actually being offered for sale or rent.

One temporary "Sold" sign per lot, provided such sign is located on the specific lot to which it relates. Such sign shall be less than 15 square feet in area in residential districts and less than 30 square feet in area in nonresidential districts. Such a sign shall be permitted only for a period not to exceed four weeks.

A single temporary, nonilluminated construction sign identifying a residential services provider who is duly licensed as required by applicable law, not exceeding 12 square feet in area, identifying the project under construction and participating designers, developers or contractors (including home development contractors) and residential services providers, provided such signs are located on the specific lot to which they relate, and provided further that such contractors, designers, developers and residential services providers are currently licensed as required by applicable law. Such a sign shall be permitted only during the construction period or period of residential services being performed at the subject lot and for a period not to exceed two weeks after completion of said work.

Signs not visible outside of a building.

Holiday decorations and specialty signs used to promote seasonal events, displayed in season. Such a sign shall be permitted for a period not to exceed 25 days.

Temporary signs advertising an event open to the public, provided such signs are removed the day after the event.

Temporary signs for garage sales, provided such signs contain the name and address of the seller and date or dates of the sale, are displayed only two days prior to the sale, and are removed the day after the sale.

"No Trespassing" signs.

Small, nonilluminated directional signs which are necessary for the direction, safety and convenience of the public.

Flat wall signs (signs attached rigidly to or painted on a wall of a building). A flat wall sign may be located anywhere on any wall of a building, provided that it shall not conceal any part of a window, that its length shall not exceed 7/8 of the facade of the establishment, and that it shall not be higher than the wall of the building to which it is attached.

Window signs (signs displayed, affixed or painted within any window).

Shopping center identification signs (two-sided freestanding signs not exceeding a height of 25 feet measured from grade to the highest point of the sign, and a sign area not exceeding one square foot for each 10 linear feet of lot frontage, but in no case more than 100 square feet, on each side). A shopping center identification sign may include only the name of the shopping center and the names of the individual tenants within the shopping center. One such sign, subject to the size requirements above, shall be permitted at each entrance from a street to the shopping center; provided, however, that the linear distance between any two such signs shall be not less than 450 feet.

Door signs (signs displayed, affixed or painted within any door). Door signs may contain only the name, address, and hours of operation of the store. The total area of all such signs shall not exceed 20% of the glass area of the door in which they are located.

Grand opening signs (signs advertising the opening of a new store). Pennants, streamers or banners may be displayed by a newly opened store for a period not to exceed 30 days.

Other freestanding signs. In the NS District, one freestanding sign not exceeding two square feet in area shall be permitted on each lot, in addition to any shopping center identification signs as permitted by Subsection C. Such sign shall contain only the address and/or the name of the building on that lot.

Roof signs.

Flashing or intermittently illuminated signs. A sign which exhibits changing light or color effects, even though the intensity of light may be relatively constant, shall be deemed a flashing sign.

Searchlights to attract attention to a sign or permitted use.

Moving or rotating signs.

Pennants, streamers or other eye-catching devices (other than grand opening signs as permitted by § 230-58E of this chapter).

Signs on awnings.

Portable signs, with or without wheels, easel-type, A-frame or other; any sign not permanently affixed to a building.

Projecting signs (signs hung from a bracket attached to a wall of a building).

Freestanding signs [signs rigidly mounted or hung from a bracket on a structure or post set in the ground, other than shopping center identification signs, other freestanding signs in the NS District as permitted by § 230-58F of this chapter, signs in connection with arborist services, landscape services, and/or wholesale nursery uses as permitted by § 230-26N(11) of this chapter, and signs exempted from regulation by § 230-56 of this chapter].
