For the purpose of this chapter, the following signs, terms and words shall have the following description and meaning:
BANNERAny sign, printed or displayed upon cloth or other flexible material, with or without frames.
BEACONA stationary or revolving light which flashes or projects illumination.
BILLBOARD SIGNSA sign that is freestanding or attached to a building which directs attention to an object, product, service, place, activity, person, institution, organization or business that is primarily offered or located at a location other than the lot upon which the sign is located. This shall not include an official sign or any directional sign specifically permitted by this Part.
BUSINESS SIGNA sign which directs attention to a business, profession, activity, commodity, service, or entertainment conducted, sold, or offered upon the premises where such sign is located, or within the building to which such sign is affixed.
DIRECTIONAL SIGNA sign, providing no advertising of any kind, which provides direction or instruction to guide persons to facilities intended to serve the public including, but not specifically limited to, those signs identifying restrooms, public telephones, public walkways, parking areas, and other similar facilities.
FLASHING SIGNAn illuminated sign on which artificial or reflected light is not maintained stationary and constant in intensity and color at all times when in use.
FREE STANDING SIGNA sign which is attached to or a part of a completely self-supporting structure. The supporting structure shall be set firmly in or below the ground surface and shall not be attached to any building or any other structure whether portable or stationary.
GROUND SIGNA sign supported by structures or supports or upon the ground and not attached or dependent for support from any building.
ILLUMINATED SIGNA sign in which an artificial source of light is used in connection with the display of such sign.
INTERNAL ILLUMINATIONIllumination of a sign which is effected by an artificial source of light, which is contained within the sign itself.
NAMEPLATE SIGNA sign only indicating the name and/or address of an occupant.
OFF-PREMISES SIGNA sign which directs attention to a business, profession, activity, commodity, service, or entertainment other than one conducted, sold or offered upon the premises where such sign is located, or within the building to which such sign is affixed.
PERSONAL EXPRESSION SIGNAn on-premises sign or flag that expresses an opinion, interest, position or other noncommercial message.

PORTABLE SIGNA sign not permanently affixed to the ground, a building, or other structure, which may be moved from place to place.
PROJECTING SIGNA sign which is affixed to a building or wall and extends beyond the line of such building or wall or beyond the surface of that portion of the building or wall to which it is affixed by more than 16 inches.
REAL ESTATE SIGNA temporary sign placed upon property for the purpose of advertising to the public the sale or lease of said property.
ROOF SIGNAny sign wholly erected, constructed or maintained on the roof structure or parapet wall of any building.
SIGNAny identification, description, illustration, or device illuminated or non-illuminated which is visible to the general public and directs attention to a product, service, place, activity, person, institution, business or solicitation, including any permanently installed or situated merchandise; or any emblem, painting, flag, banner, pennant, or placard designed to advertise, identify, or convey information.
SIGN SIZE or SIGN AREAThe area of the sign facing, including any border, framing or decorative attachments. In the case of freestanding letters, it shall be the area contained between the highest and lowest points of any letters and the extremity points of the first and last letters.
TEMPORARY SIGNA non-permanent sign erected, affixed, or maintained on a premises for a short, usually fixed, period of time.
WALL SIGNA sign attached directly to an exterior wall of a building or dependent upon a building for support with the exposed face of the sign located in a place substantially parallel to such exterior building wall to which the sign is attached or which it is supported.
WINDOW SIGNA sign attached to, placed upon, or painted on the interior or exterior of a window or door of a building which is intended for viewing from the exterior of such building.
