For any driveway wherein the dwelling unit on the subject parcel has an eighty-foot setback or less from the edge of cartway, the maximum slope permitted shall not exceed 10% for the entire length of the driveway.

For any driveway wherein the dwelling unit on the subject parcel has a greater than eighty-foot setback from the edge of cartway, the maximum slope permitted shall not exceed 5% for the first 25 feet, shall not exceed 8% for the distance over 25 feet but less than 80 feet, and shall not exceed 12% for the distance 80 feet and greater in length.

Horizontal curves shall be utilized for driveways that are deflected horizontally in excess of 2°. For driveways in excess of 100 feet in length, the inside turning edge of the driving surface shall be a minimum radius of 40 feet.

Vertical curves for driveways are intended to avoid abrupt vertical grade changes. Vertical curves shall be used at changes of grade exceeding 1%. For driveways in excess of 100 feet in length, the minimum vertical curve design shall be based on a design speed of 15 miles per hour.

Driveways shall be paved for the first 50 feet, as measured from the edge of cartway. A stable surface, at a minimum, is required for driveways with a distance of greater than 50 feet.

Driveways shall be designed and maintained to support the imposed loads of fire apparatus and shall be surfaced so as to provide all-weather driving capabilities.

Driveways shall be a minimum width of 10 feet. For driveways exceeding 500 feet, measured on center line distance, a pulloff area of 60 feet in length and a minimum of 10 feet in width shall be required after approximately 250 feet of distance from the cartway, and additional such pull-off areas are required at intervals of approximately 250 feet thereafter.

Driveways exceeding 500 feet in length should receive the review of the Fire Chief or designee of the Fire Chief of the respective district where the property is located, to assure proper positioning of pull-off areas.

Facilities, buildings or portions of buildings, other than single-family or semidetached homes, constructed after the effective date of this chapter shall be accessible to fire department apparatus by way of an approved fire apparatus access road with an asphalt, concrete or other approved driving surface capable of supporting the imposed load of fire apparatus weighing at least 75,000 pounds (34,019 kg).

Driveways for commercial and industrial uses shall comply with the National Fire Code with respect to paving configuration.

A six-inch-deep swale is required across a driveway. A maximum ratio of 6:1 is required for the swale side slopes, from the edge of cartway to the right-of-way.

Driveways requiring a greater-than-six-inch swale shall utilize a pipe size determined by the general planning engineer based upon drainage calculations supplied by the applicant. A minimum pipe size of 15 inches is required.

All owners of real property in the Township shall maintain any drainage facility constructed for the purpose of controlling drainage on their property, including but not limited to pipes, swales, and diversion channels, in such a manner as to render the facility unobstructed and functioning as designed at all times.

No driveway or drainage facility or structure shall be constructed or altered within the roadway right-of-way and no drainage facility of the Township shall be altered or connected onto without first obtaining a permit from the Township.

Unless specifically authorized by the permit, the permittee shall not alter the existing drainage pattern or the existing flow rate or velocity of drainage water. Unless specifically authorized by the permit, the permittee shall not direct additional drainage of surface water onto or into the roadway right-of-way or roadway facilities in a way which would have a detrimental effect on the roadway or roadway facilities.

Issuance of a permit under this chapter does not relieve the permittee from any additional responsibility to secure other federal, state or Township approvals or permits as may be required by law.

All property owners shall continuously maintain all driveways and adjacent areas within the roadway right-of-way to conform to the permit and ensure the access does not interfere or is not inconsistent with the design, maintenance and drainage of the roadway or the safe and convenient passage of traffic upon the highway.

Sight distance is adequate to safely allow each permitted movement to be made into or out of the access driveway;

The free movement of normal roadway traffic is not impaired;

The driveway will not create a hazard; and

The driveway will not create an area of undue traffic congestion on the roadway.

All driveways must be inspected by the individual or inspection firm appointed by the Township before the start of work. As-built certifications from the applicant's engineer are required from all permittees.

The Fire Chief or designee of the Fire Chief for the respective district where the property is located shall be notified of each application for a driveway permit 500 feet or more in length and may review same. The Fire Chief or designee may supply comments, within five days of notification, to the Township regarding the proposed driveway.
