- BUILDING REGULATION AND CODE ENFORCEMENT

Sec. 6-2-1. - Office of building official created.

(a)

There is hereby created and established the office of building official who shall be appointed by the city commission.

(b)

The building official shall serve at the pleasure of the city commission and shall have the responsibility for the enforcement of the standard codes adopted by this chapter and shall perform other duties as may be prescribed by the city commission.

Sec. 6-2-2. - Permits.

A person, firm or corporation shall not do or cause to be done any installations, alterations, repairs or replacement of equipment or systems covered by the provisions of this Code, without first having obtained the proper permit from the building official.

Sec. 6-2-3. - Building permit required.

No person shall set up any mobile home or commence any construction of any new structure or alteration to the exterior of any existing structure within the city if the cost of the construction or repair will exceed $500.00 without first applying for and obtaining a building permit from the city clerk. The building permit fee to be filed with the application shall be as set forth in the city's fee schedule. The application for the building permit shall contain the following information: name of property owner, address of property, type of building to be constructed, size of building to be constructed, name of contractor, name of plumber, and name of electrician.

Sec. 6-2-4. - Disapproval of permit application.

If the application for a building permit is not approved, the building official shall state in writing on the application the cause for such disapproval and shall notify the applicant immediately of the reasons for disapproval. Thereafter, the applicant may reapply for a building permit provided he overcomes, to the satisfaction of the building official, the causes for the previous disapproval, or he may institute appeal proceedings.

Sec. 6-2-5. - Penalty for failure to obtain building permit.

Any person failing to obtain a building permit before commencing construction shall be punished as set forth in section 1-1-5.
