Definitions. For the purposes of this chapter, the following terms shall be defined and applied as follows. (Where a definition herein conflicts with a definition elsewhere in this chapter, or any other Township ordinance, for these purposes the definition contained in this section shall be controlling.)
MINERALSIncludes, but is not limited to, anthracite and bituminous coal, lignite, limestone and dolomite, sand, gravel, rock, stone, earth, slag, shale, ore, vermiculite, clay, oil, gas, petroleum, precious metals, and other mineral resources.
MININGIncludes any other sort of mineral extraction in addition to those defined or referred to explicitly or implicitly in definitions below.
SURFACE MININGThe extraction of minerals from the earth, or from waste or stockpiles, or from pits or banks, by removing the strata or materials which overlie, or are above or between deposits of minerals. The term as herein defined shall include, but not be limited to strip, drift, auger and open pit mining, dredging, quarrying and leaching, mountaintop removal, box cutting, and activities similar or related thereto.
UNDERGROUND MININGThe extraction of minerals froth beneath the surface of the earth by means of any system employing shafts, tunnels or the like as a method of reaching the mineral, and conveying it to the surface.
