PREFACE

This volume contains the Zoning Ordinance of Shelby Charter Township, Michigan, Ordinance No. 212, adopted on September 19, 1997, and effective on October 19, 1997, and as subsequently amended.

The zoning ordinance has been printed as submitted by the Township and the original numbering system has been retained. Obvious misspellings have been corrected without notation. For stylistic purposes, headings and catchlines have been made uniform and the same system of capitalization, citation to state statutes and expression of numbers in text as appears in the Code of Ordinances has been used. Additions made for clarity are indicated by brackets.

Source Materials

Features of this publication that are particularly useful are the zoning comparative table located in the back of this volume. Any amendatory legislation may be located in the zoning comparative table by number and date of enactment, and the sections or subsections amended will be listed. In addition, the sources of any amendments to a section are listed in a parenthetical history note following the amended section. The absence of such a note indicates that the section derives unamended from the regulations as originally provided by the Township.

Page Numbering System

The page numbering system used in this Code is a prefix system. The letters to the left of the colon are an abbreviation which represents a certain portion of the volume. The number to the right of the colon represents the number of the page in that portion. In the case of an article of the zoning ordinance, the number to the left of the colon indicates the number of the article. The following are parts of this volume and their corresponding prefixes:

ZONING ORDINANCEZ1:1
ZONING COMPARATIVE TABLEZCT:1

Index

As part of the publication project, a comprehensive index was prepared. Each particular subject has been placed under several headings, some couched in lay phraseology and others in legal terminology. There are numerous cross references within the index which stand as guideposts to direct the user to the particular item in which he is interested.

Looseleaf Supplements

Another special feature of this volume is the supplemental service, by which the publication will be periodically updated. Upon the final passage of amendments, they will be properly edited and the page or pages affected will be reprinted. These new pages will be distributed to holders of copies of the publication with instructions for inserting the pages and deleting the obsolete pages. The instruction sheet for the most current supplement should be placed in the front of the volume, and it is recommended that deleted pages be saved and filed for historical reference.

Acknowledgments

This volume is presented for the use and benefit of the citizens of the Charter Township of Shelby, Michigan. This publication was under the direct supervision of James Earl, Code Attorney, of the Municipal Code Corporation, Tallahassee, Florida. Credit is gratefully given to the other members of the publisher's staff for their sincere interest and able assistance throughout the project.
