ARTICLE 11

- SIGNAGE

11-1.- Sign types.

The types of signs allowed in the town are listed below:

11-1.1

Informational signs:

(A)

Official notices issued by any court or public agency, such signs shall not exceed six square feet in area.

(B)

Traffic, directional, warning or information signs authorized by any government agency, such as state department of transportation, shall not exceed six square feet in area.

(C)

Wooden signs not exceeding two square feet in area bearing only property numbers, postbox numbers or names of occupants of premises. Wooden signs affixed to the principal building may be up to six square feet in area.

(D)

Signs directing and guiding traffic and parking on private property but bearing no advertising matter. (see also [subsection] 11-1.3)

(E)

Political campaign signs allowed on private property only with no illumination, maximum of six square feet in size with no reflectors. May be installed no more than 30 days prior to election and must be removed within five days after election.

(F)

The State of South Carolina Historical signs are exempt from this sign ordinance.

(G)

Street signs: The Town of Pawleys Island street signs are exempt from the sign ordinance.

11-1.2

Advertising signs:

(A)

Temporary signs advertising noncommercial activities such as garage sales, contractors or subcontractors who are working on-site, etc. No more than two temporary signs shall be permitted on a lot and individual signs shall not exceed six square feet in area. Temporary signs shall not be illuminated and shall be removed at termination of activity promoted by sign.

(B)

Real estate signs offering property for sale, lease or rent. Such signs shall not be illuminated and shall not exceed six square feet in area. No more than one for sale/lease signs shall be permitted per lot. No more than one rental sign allowed per lot. No real estate sign over four feet high from ground level. No streamers, balloons, flags or other attachments to attract attention to property being offered. No real estate signs on creek docks.

(C)

Wooden identification signs for multi-family developments and group dwellings. Such signs may be externally illuminated and shall not exceed 40 square feet in area. Only one identification sign shall be permitted per development and such sign shall be set back at least ten feet from the streets right-of-way and any side lot line.

11-1.3

Temporary signs: These signs may be used for activities or events of limited duration such as meetings, directions to an event, garage sales, contractor and subcontractor activities, etc. These signs may only be erected at start of activity and must be removed immediately at termination of activity.

11-2. - Sign measurements, materials and illumination.

11-2.1

Measurements: Unless stated otherwise, maximum sign size is to be no larger than six square feet in area (for measurement computation, see paragraph 2-80.1(A))

11-2.2

Sign materials: Unless required by state or county law, or only for house identification, signage shall not be made from reflective materials.

11-2.3.

Illumination: Signs on Pawleys Island shall not be internally illuminated unless required by state or county law.

11-3. - Remedies of the municipality for violations of the sign ordinance.

11-3.1

Road right-of-ways and common areas. In the event of a violation of the sign ordinance in these areas, law enforcement and town officials will have the right to remove the offending sign.

11-3.2

Signs on private property. In the event of a violation of the sign ordinance in these areas, law enforcement will notify the property owner of the violation and the nature of the violation. This notification shall be in writing. Upon notification, the property owner will have 72 hours to correct the violation or remove the sign. Failure to do so will subject the property owner to a fine of $100.00 per day until the offending sign is corrected or removed. The town law enforcement is hereby authorized and empowered to issue these citations.
