- PROPERTY NUMBERING

8-6.- Property numbering regulations.

8-6.1

Uniform numbering system. A uniform system of numbering properties and principal buildings, as shown on the maps identified by the title "Uniform Numbering System Map, Town of Pawleys Island, S.C.," dated April 23, 1987, (hereinafter referred to as "property number map") is hereby adopted for use in the Town of Pawleys Island. This map and all explanatory matter thereon are hereby adopted and made a part of this Unified Development Code. A copy of said map may be found as figure 2-A in this Unified Development Code.

8-6.2

Assignment of numbers.

(A)

All properties or parcels of land within the limits of the Town of Pawleys Island shall hereafter be identified by reference to the uniform numbering system adopted herein; provided, further that all existing numbers of property not in conformity with this Unified Development Code shall be changed to conform to the system adopted herein;

(B)

All numbers shall be assigned on the basis of a reference point which is the intersection of the northernmost point of the town and the easternmost point of the town. Measuring from the reference point south and west in increasing sequential order and allowing sufficient numbers for future division of lots pursuant to the existing zoning regulations. On north-south streets, the properties on the right-hand side going north are numbered even and the properties on the left are numbered odd. On east-west streets, the properties on the right going east are numbered even and those on the left are numbered odd;

(C)

No building shall be assigned more than one number; and,

(D)

Notwithstanding any other provisions of this Unified Development Code, when multiple buildings on a parcel exist, under the remaining provisions of this Unified Development Code, each building will be assigned a separate number designation, but if due to a limited amount of frontage, sufficient numbers are not available, then all such buildings at that location will be assigned a number and will carry a letter designation such as A, B, C, or the like, in addition to the assigned number.

8-6.3

Location of numbers.

(A)

When each house or building has been assigned its respective number or numbers, the owner, occupant or agent shall place upon each house or building controlled by him the number or numbers assigned under the uniform system provided by this Unified Development Code.

(B)

Such numbers shall be placed on existing buildings within 65 days after the effective date of the ordinance from which this Unified Development Code is derived and within 20 days after assigning the number in the case of numbers assigned after June 15, 1987. The cost of complying with this Unified Development Code shall be paid by the property owner. Numbers used shall not be less than three inches in height and shall not be subject to the provision regarding signs contained in the zoning regulations. These numbers shall be made of a durable and clearly visible material and shall be in a contrasting color from the building.

(C)

The numbers shall be conspicuously placed immediately above, on or at the side of the proper door of each building so that the number can be seen plainly from the street line. Whenever any building is situated more than 50 feet from the street line, the number must be placed near the walk, driveway or the entrance to such building and upon a mail box, gate post, fence, post or other appropriate place so as to be easily and clearly discernible from the street line.

8-6.4

Administration.

(A)

For the purpose of facilitating correct numbering, maps showing all streets and public ways within the town showing the proper numbers of all houses or buildings fronting upon all streets and public ways shall be kept on file in the office of the building inspector. These maps shall be open for inspection by all persons by contacting the building inspector during regular business hours.

(B)

It shall be the duty of the building inspector to inform any party applying for the number or numbers belonging to or within the limits of a lot of the proper number to be used. In case of conflicts as to the proper number to be assigned, the decision of the building inspector may be appealed to the zoning board of adjustments in the manner outlined in section 3-7 of this Unified Development Code.

(C)

Whenever any building shall be erected or located in the town after adoption of the ordinance from which this Unified Development Code is derived, it shall be the duty of the owner to procure the correct number as designated by the building inspector and to immediately affix said number as provided by this Unified Development Code. No building permit shall be issued for any structure until the owner has procured from the building inspector the official number of the premises. Final approval of any structure erected, altered, or modified after the effective date of the ordinance from which this Unified Development Code is derived shall be withheld by the building inspector until permanent and proper numbers have been affixed to the structure in accordance with these regulations.
