Regulations
"SIGN" | Any device designed and intended to bring the subject thereof to the attention of the public; provided, however, that the following shall not be included in the application of the regulations herein:

"Accessory" | A sign which directs attention to merchandise, service, business or profession conducted on the premises of the sign’s location. |
"Advertising" | A sign which directs attention to a use, product, commodity or service not related to the premises. |
"Banner" | Any sign made of cloth, plastic or similar fabric material, with no enclosing framework, that is mounted to a pole or building. |
"Business" | A sign which directs attention to a use conducted, product or commodity sold, or service performed upon the premises. |
"Canopy" | Any sign that is part of or attached to an awning, canopy or other fabric, plastic or structural protective cover over a door, entrance window or outdoor service area. |
"Fascia" | A sign attached to or erected against a wall or building with the face parallel to the building wall. |
"Freestanding Monument" | An accessory sign, not attached to or part of a building, and having a height of nine feet (9') or less. |
"Freestanding Pylon" | An accessory sign, not attached to or part of a building, and having a height greater than nine feet (9'). |
"Nameplate" | A sign indicating the name and/or occupation of a person or persons residing on the premises or legally occupying the premises, or indicating a home occupation legally existing on the premises. |
"Nonaccessory Sign/Billboard" | A sign which directs attention to a business, commodity, service, or entertainment conducted, sold or offered elsewhere than on the premises, and only incidentally on the premises, if at all. |
"Portable" | A sign not permanently attached to the ground or building or a sign designed to be transported, including, but not limited to, signs designed to be transported by means of wheels; A-frame and T-frame signs; balloons used as signs; banner signs; and signs attached to, displayed upon or painted on vehicles parked and visible from the public right of way, unless the vehicle is used in the normal day to day operation of the business. |
"Projecting" | A sign attached to a building or other structure and extending in whole or in part more than fifteen inches (15") away from the wall or the building or structure. |
"Property" | A sign related to the property on which it is located and offering such property for sale or lease, or advertising contemplated improvements, or announcing the name of the builder, owner, designer or developer of the project, or warning against trespassing, etc. |
"Public Information" | A sign erected by a public or nonprofit agency, service club, etc., giving information to direct the public to both public and private facilities and major uses. |
"Sign Face Area" | That area enclosed by one continuous line connecting the extreme points or edges of those portions of a sign containing text, lighting or logo, together with any frame or material which forms an integral part of the display, but not including the necessary support uprights on which the sign is placed. Where the sign consists of open letters or symbols, the area shall be considered to be that of the smallest parallelogram or triangle which encompasses all the letters or symbols. The area shall be determined using the largest silhouette usable at any one time. Freestanding or projecting signs having parallel planes not more than twenty four inches (24") apart shall be considered as a single sign both as to number and area. |
"Temporary" | Temporary signs shall include any sign, banner, pennant or advertising display constructed of cloth, canvas, light fabric, cardboard, wallboard or other light materials, with or without frames, intended to be displayed for a short period of time only. |
The purpose of this section is to provide standards and requirements relating to the location and design of accessory signs and similar structures.
Any handbill or sign found posted upon any public property contrary to the provisions of this subsection may be removed by the police department, zoning administrator or other person designated by the Town for that purpose. The person responsible for such posting shall be liable for the cost incurred in the removal, storage and/or disposal thereof and the Town is authorized to effect the collection of said cost.
